Number of fellowships
Annually Ten to fifteen Fellowships will be awarded the Volkswagen scholarships.
Value of award
As per the norms of scholarship, the initial funding period is five years depending on the field of research and career experience, projects in a total amount of up to 1,000,000 Euro which includes Fellow’s position for scientific personnel, Non-personnel costs relevant to the project.
In case the maximum amount of funding has not been fully received by the applicant with the initial application, additional funds can be applied for during the course of the Fellowship to provide flexible support, A second funding period of up to three years may be provided under conditions.
Eligibility Criteria for Volkswagen Foundation Freigeist Fellowships
The applicant must have been obtained their doctorate no longer than five years previously in the related fields or disciplines, it should be integrated within a university or an extramural research institution in Germany, the applicant must have changed their academic environment by the time of fellowship, Applicants from outside the home country should demonstrate specific English language or other language requirements in order to study at university.

The funding scheme is open to all junior researchers of all nationalities.
